Irish Thatched Cottage - Ireland

Irish Thatched Cottage - Ireland

An Irish Thatched Cottage - County Down N Ireland - Note the 'half door' and small windows - there were reasons for having such... the half door allowed smoke from the fire and 'other' smells out of the home including animal smells - because in days gone by animals lived in the home with the occupants - why??? Central heating !!!  Small windows - two reasons - heat retention and - window tax .. the bigger and more windows you had - the more money you paid !!! Hence the saying - "daylight robbery"
